ATEX Tablets for Hazardous Areas

An ATEX tablet has to do more than survive a hard day on site. It has to be certified for use where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. In oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, offshore and utilities, an ordinary tablet cannot go past the zone boundary, so inspections, permits and readings end up on paper or are entered later at a desk. ATEX tablets carry that work into the classified area. They are certified to ATEX and IECEx for Zone 1/21 or Zone 2/22, and sealed to IP66 or higher. The right tablet is the one whose Ex marking matches your area classification.

Industries That Rely on Our ATEX Tablets

ATEX tablets are used wherever classified areas meet day-to-day inspection and maintenance work: oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, offshore, utilities and dust-zone processing. Each block lists typical tasks; the zone and Ex marking still have to be matched to your site.

Oil & Gas

Wellheads, refineries, tank farms and pipeline stations combine flammable hydrocarbons with continuous operation. Certified Zone 1/21 and Zone 2/22 tablets carry work orders, isolation checks, drawings and inspection forms into the classified area, so readings are captured once, at the asset.

Oil & Gas

Chemical & Petrochemical

Chemical and petrochemical plants handle volatile solvents and feedstocks across large gas zones. Tablets certified to gas group IIC suit the widest range of gases, while sealed housings resist the spills and cleaning agents of a process plant.

Chemical & Petrochemical

Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceutical production uses flammable solvents in areas that also demand strict documentation. Certified tablets let operators record batch steps, checks and deviations inside solvent-handling and drying areas, rather than transcribing them later from paper.

Pharmaceutical

Offshore & Marine

Offshore platforms and vessels pair hazardous areas with salt spray, rain and constant movement. IP-sealed, certified tablets with 4G or 5G, Wi-Fi and GNSS support inspections and maintenance on deck and in process modules, with SOS functions for crews working alone.

Offshore & Marine

Energy & Utilities

Gas distribution, biogas, water treatment and power sites can all contain classified areas alongside ordinary outdoor work. Certified tablets let one device cover both, from meter reading and asset checks to work inside a Zone 1 or Zone 2 boundary.

Energy & Utilities

Manufacturing & Food Processing

Flour, sugar, grain and powder handling can create combustible dust zones, while paint, coating and solvent lines create gas zones. Tablets certified for Zone 21/22 dust as well as gas support shop-floor monitoring and maintenance in these areas.

How to Choose the Right ATEX Tablet

Start with your hazardous-area classification, because certification, not ruggedness, decides where a tablet can go. Take the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class from your site documentation, then choose a tablet whose Ex marking meets or exceeds all three: a Zone 1/21 model can also work in Zone 2/22, and a IIC gas group also covers IIB and IIA. Confirm which scheme applies to your site, whether ATEX, UKEX, IECEx or the North American Class and Division system. Next, match the operating system to your software: Windows for desktop and engineering applications, Android for app-led rounds and data capture. Then think about screen size, glove use, battery life, mounting and any accessories, remembering that accessories used in the zone need their own certification. Finally, have a specialist check the full marking and the certificate's conditions of use against your classification before you order.

An ATEX tablet is a tablet certified for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere. A rugged tablet is built to survive drops, dust and water, but sealing alone does not admit it to a classified area. The featured models carry ATEX and IECEx certification, such as Zone 1/21 on the i.safe MOBILE IS930.1, IS940.1 and IS945.1 and Zone 2/22 on the Getac UX10-EX-G3, F110-EX-G7 and K120-EX-G3. The exact Ex marking for your zone should always be confirmed before specifying.

Zone 1 (gas) and Zone 21 (dust) are areas where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation. Zone 2 and Zone 22 are areas where it is unlikely, and short-lived if it does occur. A Zone 1/21 tablet may also be used in Zone 2/22, but not the other way round. The i.safe MOBILE IS930.1, IS940.1 and IS945.1 and the Aegex 100M are certified for Zone 1. The i.safe MOBILE IS940.2 and the Getac UX10-EX-G3, F110-EX-G7 and K120-EX-G3 are certified for Zone 2/22.

Each part of the marking tells you something. II is the equipment group for surface industries. 2G is the category, for gas in Zone 1. Ex ib is the protection type, intrinsic safety. IIC is the gas group and T4 the temperature class. Gb is the equipment protection level. The dust marking works the same way: for example, II 2D Ex ib IIIC T135°C Db gives a maximum surface temperature of 135°C. On the Getac EX models, "op is" refers to protection against optical radiation from the device. Match every part to your area classification, not just the zone.

Gas group IIC covers the most easily ignited gases, such as hydrogen and acetylene, and equipment certified to IIC may also be used where IIB or IIA gases are present. The i.safe MOBILE and Getac EX tablets featured here are certified to IIC. The Aegex 100M is certified to IIB, so it should not be specified where a IIC gas is present. Your site's area classification documents will state the gas group.

The Aegex 100M is listed for Zone 1, and for Zone 0 when used with the Aegex leather case, with the marking II 1 G Ex ia IIB T4 Ga. Its gas group is IIB, so check that this matches the gases on your site. The other featured tablets are not Zone 0 models. Zone 0 is the most demanding classification, so confirm the certificate and its conditions of use with us before specifying.

ATEX is the European scheme for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, IECEx is the international scheme, and both use zones. North America uses the Class and Division system. The i.safe MOBILE tablets carry all three: the Zone 1/21 models list NEC 500 Class I Div. 1 and the Zone 2/22 models Class I Div. 2. The Getac EX models are listed with ATEX and IECEx Zone 2/22. If your site is in Great Britain, check with your safety team whether ATEX or UKEX marking is required, and ask us for the certificate for the exact model.

Choose by the software you need to run. Windows suits desktop, engineering and existing business applications: the Getac UX10-EX-G3, F110-EX-G7 and K120-EX-G3 run Windows 11 Pro, the i.safe MOBILE IS945.1 runs Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC for Arm64, and the Aegex 100M runs Windows 11 IoT. Android suits app-led work such as inspection rounds and data capture: the i.safe MOBILE IS930.1, IS940.1 and IS940.2 run Android 14 and are Android Enterprise Recommended. The Getac ZX10-EX-G2, an Android 13 tablet certified for ATEX and IECEx Zone 2/22, is also listed on rugged.co.uk.

No. An IP rating measures how well a tablet keeps out dust and water: IP66 on the Getac EX models, IP67 on the Aegex 100M and IP68 on the i.safe MOBILE tablets. Whether a tablet may be used in an explosive atmosphere depends only on its Ex certification. A sealed tablet without that certification must not enter the zone, so look for both on wet or dusty process plant.

Yes. The i.safe MOBILE IS930.1, IS940.1, IS940.2 and IS945.1 displays are usable with gloves, the Getac UX10-EX-G3 touchscreen is operable with gloves and wet fingers, the Aegex 100M offers capacitive touch for gloves or pen, and the Getac F110-EX-G7 adds a digitiser mode. Protective gloves can stay on during data entry.

The i.safe MOBILE tablets use an 8160 mAh battery, replaceable on the IS940.1, IS940.2 and IS945.1. The Getac F110-EX-G7 has a LifeSupport hot-swappable battery system and the K120-EX-G3 has dual hot-swappable batteries, while the Aegex 100M uses dual lithium-ion batteries. Whether a battery may be changed inside the hazardous area depends on the certificate's conditions of use, so check this before planning battery swaps in the zone.

Several models are built for it. The i.safe MOBILE IS940.1, IS940.2 and IS945.1 have a 16-pin ISM interface for accessories, and the Getac F110-EX-G7 offers optional barcode reader, serial port, LAN, HF RFID or fingerprint reader modules. Any accessory used in the zone must itself be covered by suitable certification, so tell us what you need to connect and we will check it against the marking.

Yes. The Winmate R15L600-65EX is a 15-inch rugged display in a stainless steel housing sealed to IP65, with a resistive touchscreen bonded to the panel, M12 connectors and a 9 to 36V DC input. It carries ATEX II 3G Ex ic nA IIC T4 Gc, IECEx Ex nA IIC T4 Gc and Class I, Div. 2, Groups A,B,C,D T4, with a certified ambient range of -20°C to +50°C. Brightness is 550 nits, or 1000 nits as an option. It suits fixed Zone 2 workstations alongside the tablets here.

Start with your area classification: the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class. Then check the tablet's full Ex marking meets or exceeds all three, and confirm which scheme your site requires: ATEX, UKEX, IECEx or Class and Division. Check any conditions of use on the certificate, such as the case the Aegex 100M needs for Zone 0 or rules on charging and battery changes, and make sure accessories are covered too. Confirm the Ex marking for your zone before specifying; our specialists can check it with you.
